All Things Headboard!

At Kelling Designs, headboards are an integral part of our bedroom design. If you are looking for an easy way to add colour and make a statement, then headboards are the way forward. As well as adding comfort, they add another level of drama, texture and detail. We just love them and have a lot of fun drawing and coming up with different shapes and designs.

History of the headboard

In ancient times, headboards were created for the sole purpose of blocking cold draughts during the night, allowing people during that time to sleep warm and cosy. They date back to Pharaoh’s in Egypt and were used as a sign of social status.

There has been a vast array of headboard designs throughout the ages - cast iron, wood, four-poster, upholstered and many more. Upholstered headboards (or stuffers, as they were originally known) became popular during the 17th century and still today, upholstered, shaped headboards are very ‘in’ – they work as a focal point of the bedroom and are a great starting point in terms of the design direction for the rest of the room.

By choosing a stand-out fabric this can work as an excellent guide in picking other fabrics for window treatments and soft furnishings..

Opting for a more plain and neutral fabric for the headboard, it can help ground the room if the rest of the room is already quite busy and if there is wallpaper sitting behind the headboard.

The options are endless for headboards, which make them such a joy to incorporate into schemes. They are easy to install by mounting onto the wall or attaching to a bed base. We had an especially fun time designing the below headboard for a brave client and certainly leaves a lasting impression…
