How to create the perfect bedroom for your best night’s sleep yet

Did you know that World Sleep Day takes place this month? The World Sleep Society has named 18th March 2022 as the day to raise awareness about its work to advance sleep education across the globe, focusing on sleep health, circadian rhythms and sleep disorders. In these uncertain times, sleep can feel out of reach, leaving us feeling frustrated, cranky and, unsurprisingly, tired. To make matters worse, losing sleep can affect your skin, your weight and your immune system, so ensuring you take the right steps to give yourself the best chances of a full 40 winks each night is crucial from a holistic health perspective.

Sleep experts suggest all the usual suspects: limiting caffeine and blue light exposure, trying to keep to similar sleeping and waking hours each day, making sure your bedroom is a comfortable temperature and reducing noise and artificial light. Of course, this is all excellent advice, but we know that for some, good sleep depends on a restful, personality-filled environment that draws on colour, texture and thoughtful details. This month, we’re sharing some top tips on how to create the perfect bedroom for your best night’s sleep yet.

Hues to help you snooze

It’s important to be intentional about the colours you choose to live with. Colour is a highly potent trigger for our moods and emotions, so making informed decisions about our palettes, especially in the bedroom, can make or break its atmosphere. Ultimately, it’s about looking inwards and finding out which colours soothe you. Generally speaking, soft blues, pinks and greens lend a tranquil quality to bedrooms, especially when paired with neutrals like white, pale browns and plaster tones.

Textural healing

Rooms with limited colour palettes need an emphasis on texture to look their best. Adding layers with cushions and throws on the bed is an easy way to achieve instant textural impact. Our 100% wool herringbone Kelling Throws are perfect for the task, and in true Kelling Designs style, they’re available with bespoke trims to help tie your scheme together. Some other textural elements to bring into the bedroom are floor-length pleated curtains in a substantial linen, mixed pile rugs and gathered lampshades.

Night light

Lighting, more generally, is crucial in the creation of a restful bedroom. There is rarely any need for harsh, bright lighting in this space, so avoid one central source of light in favour of a layered approach with lamps across the room. It’s best to rely on natural light during the day, and in the evening, to create a soothing, cocooning feeling with pockets of lamplight. Pair your gathered lampshades with bases in your chosen relaxing colours, such as our Silvy style in Sage, Calico or Putty. Not only will a Silvy lamp base add another touchpoint to your palette, but it will also bring in more texture with its high-gloss lacquer paint finish, elevating your bedside table.

Side with us…

The bedside table is at once the most important and the most neglected piece of furniture in the bedroom. It serves so many functions as the keeper of your to-be-read pile, the coaster for your cup of tea, and the source of your lamplight. However, more often than not, bedside tables are too small and cluttered to be enjoyed to their fullest. Your bedside table should be beautiful, organised and spacious to allow for a reasonable book pile, a photo frame, an alarm clock or radio, a mug or two and, of course, a generous lamp base. This ample surface space will give your nighttime routine a more seamless feel, removing the stress of the nightly act of bedtime paraphernalia Jenga. Don’t be afraid to scale up your bedside table, but be warned, once you come to know this little luxury, you’ll never go back.
