Collaboration counts..
..and how we work with architects, together, to exceed client expectations
Making the most of the decorative features in this elegant stately staircase
At Kelling Designs, we believe successful interior design is rooted in no-nonsense communication and collaboration between us and the architects we work with. When embarking on a substantial project on a historic property or when from the ground up, it is crucial to get all consultants in the same room, working together from day one. This involves any relevant contractors, landscape designers, interior designer, architect, M&E consultants instructed on the project. Each brings a valuable set of perspectives and of course, highly specific expertise. The synergy between them and the architect really sets the tone for any project. Ultimately this allows all to offer a more integrated approach that enhances the experience for the client, and the project.
Roles and goals
Architects and interior designers have distinct yet complementary roles, so it's important that we define our remits on each project very early on. Architects are primarily concerned with the building's structure and materials. For instance, in projects involving listed buildings, they ensure that all necessary interventions take place within the scope of various restrictions imposed by the listing. As interior designers, we focus on the functionality and aesthetics of interior spaces, considering and implementing the overall layout, furnishing and surfaces.
Redefining the use of space and interlocking rooms
It takes two...
It is essential for both architects and interior designers to be involved right from the planning stages. This collaborative approach avoids wasted money if the interior designer is involved at a later stage. Interior designers contribute to critical decisions about layout, use and flow of a house and offer a different perspective on the look and feel.
While architects might take the lead during major construction phases, it is crucial to keep interior designers dialled in. This ongoing communication ensures that decisions made during construction do not accidentally restrict future design concepts or the intended use for other rooms. For instance, decisions about structural elements or utility placements can have a significant impact on furniture layout and the overall functionality of the space.
Hanging is an art in itself
Attention to detail
Almost every aspect of a project will benefit from the combined expertise of architects and interior designers, particularly in relation to lighting, electrics, plumbing, and finishes. Lighting could be considered the most important element of this as it’s so integral to the success of a design scheme. For example, if a client has a collection of artwork for which we need to deliver a hanging or curation strategy, downlighting in specific areas of each room will need to be taken into account by the architects.
Working with ADAM Architecture to bring the bathroom vision and client needs to life
When it comes to plumbing, bathroom and kitchen designs also draw heavily on the knowledge of both the interior designer and architect. Architects provide the technical know-how and connections to skilled craftsmen, while we offer creative solutions to ensure these spaces are both functional and stylish.
Making use of the space - the bathroom realised
And apply liberally…
Across our projects, we have seen firsthand the benefits of a healthy collaborative approach with architects. For example, in a recent bathroom and kitchen project, we worked closely with ADAM Architecture, a leading traditional architecture practice, with whom we have a long-standing partnership. The team’s exceptional drawing skills and extensive network of craftsmen were instrumental in bringing our collective vision, and the expectations of the client, to life. Of all the elements of the property on which collaboration was necessary, a favourite is the bespoke joinery unit in the bathroom of a beautiful historic home that we designed together, complete with integrated mirrors and individual picture lights.
This collaborative approach ensures that every project is not only thoughtfully and strategically planned, but also beautifully executed, resulting in spaces that are not only structurally impressive and, in some cases, sensitively restored, but also tailored to the lifestyles and tastes of our clients.
