Designing for Health and Wellbeing
and revealing a renovation project for EACH
Imagine the challenge of spending nights away from home with your child in a hospice—truly tough times.
At the East Anglia Children’s Hospice (EACH) in Milton, near Cambridge, family rooms offer a sanctuary for parents and young siblings. These rooms allow families to escape the constant activity of the care floor and maintain a sense of normalcy. Parents, often weary and managing end-of-life care, can use these spaces to rest, eat, and take care of themselves, all while staying close to their child.

To coincide with National Children's Hospice Week (16-22nd June 2025), we are delighted to reveal and share a special project that we have been working on , for a charity which is very close to Emma’s heart..

While always clean, tidy, and serviceable, the family accommodation at Milton was looking tired and dated, and in need of renovation. It needed to be made fit for purpose and could do with being more comfortable and modern.

The Task
Emma has been involved as a Patron for EACH for many years, and has been a Trustee for the last 8 years. She knows what a difference design can make for wellbeing, and how to create a comfortable and restful environment.
Emma was determined to make improvements to the space, and keen to involve others in the design community to help make a real difference. Her team, including Livi Creber and Olivia Reeve-Tucker, reached out to many contacts to invite them to contribute.
The Response
The response has been truly outstanding, offering a huge range of items from beautiful lanterns, paints, wallpapers, fabrics, furniture, soft furnishings, kitchen equipment, paintings and even the minutiae of hooks and grates.
The Results
The results, following curated styling by Emma and her team, are a tranquil haven, whilst still preserving the necessary functional elements - an example of how to make the space restful and homely, rather than typically bland, clinical and minimal, as often found in hospital settings.
On entering you are lured up the stairs by a spectacular mural by Natasha Hulse capturing the local woodland and meandering river and bringing the softness of nature in, which is beautifully lit by a striking lantern. The doors throughout are painted varying bright colours, rather than white, to provide interest and aid navigation visually for the tired guests.
The reception has a table and chairs for the family members to take a break, eat or work at, or alternatively they can relax on the sofas and watch TV/play games. The kitchen has been spruced up and offers amenities so the guests can cook themselves a meal or just have a pause with a tea/coffee.
Each of the three bedrooms include big and luxurious beds with soft sheets so that the guests can get a quiet and comfortable sleep, hopefully snatching some moments to recharge, in the knowledge that they are close to hand if needed.
Artwork has also been donated for the walls to add to the character and design. Together these donations demonstrate how it is possible to achieve the luxury of a 5* hotel and support the families during their hospice stay.
